  • January 24: Key Art's Production of ****King's Dream**. 7p.m. in Norman James Theater, William Smith Hall.
    The Washington College community will be celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. King's Dream is a multimedia performance that incorporates music, video images, and personal narratives of struggle and perseverance during the Civil Right's Movement. The event is sponsored by The Office of Multicultural Affairs, C.V. Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience, SGA Diversity Committee, and The Office of Student Affairs.
  • February: Black History Month
  • February 6: Black History Month Movie: Freedom On My Mind. 7p.m. in Litrenta.
    Freedom On My Mind focuses on the tireless efforts of many to achieve voting rights for African-Americans during the Civil Rights Movement.
  • February 14: "Summer of Freedom" Lecture by Dr. JoAnn Robinson. 7:30p.m. in Hynson Lounge.
    Dr. Robinson shares her experiences during the Civil Rights Movement involving voting rights and equality for African-Americans. The documentary Freedom On My Mind will be a point of reference for her lecture. Dr. Robinson is a Professor of History at Morgan State University. The sponsor of this lecture is the Center for the Study of Black Culture.
  • February 15: Coffee Hour with Dr. JoAnn Robinson. 10a.m. CAC Common Room and Center for the Study of Black Culture.
  • FEBRUARY 25*: *The Sophie Kerr Committee and the Office of Multicultural Affairs present a reading from DREAM NOT OF OTHER WORLDS: TEACHING IN A SEGREGATED SCHOOL, 1970. A reading by Dr. Huston Diehl, Professor of English, University of Iowa, with Polly Sommerfeld, Professor, Washington College. Sophie Kerr Room, Miller Library, 4:30 p.m.
  • February 25: Black History Month Movie: Marlin Riggs' Color Adjustment. 7 p.m. in Litrenta.
    Color Adjustment documents how television slowly integrated African-American families in to primetime television.
  • February 26: Conversations on Race in Television. 6:30p.m.-8:30p.m. Hynson Study Lounge.
    The Office of Multicultural Affairs will lead small discussions on Race and African-Americans in Television as a follow up to the Marlon Riggs' documentary Color Adjustment.

Heritage Months

Latino/a Hispanic Heritage Month — September 15 to October 15

Latino/a Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15th through October 15th. The Washington College community celebrates Latino/Hispanic cultures, achievements, and heritage through educational programs and events.

GLBT Heritage Month — October

The month of October was chosen to celebrate gay and lesbian history in order to commemorate the anniversaries of the first two gay and lesbian marches on Washington. The first march was in October 1979, and drew over 200,000, and the second in October 1987, which drew over 500,000 and had the first public viewing of the NAMES Project AIDS Quilt.—Bucknell University

Native American Heritage Month- November

In November, Washington College celebrates the culture, achievements, and different heritages Native Americans.

Black History Month — February

Black History Month is a celebration of the achievements of African-American and African culture.

Women's History Month — March

Women's History Month began in 1987 when the National Women's History Project petitioned Congress to declare a month in which women are remembered and recognized for their accomplishments. —Bucknell University

Asian Pacific Heritage Month — May

The United States celebrates Asian Pacific Heritage Month in May. Due to the academic year, Washington College celebrates the heritage month in April.
